  • Music

“We should never underestimate the power of music, it knows no boundaries of language, race or background. It is the universal language – everyone has a soundtrack to their lives.”

Julian Lloyd Webber, Cellist and Conductor

    Intent

Music is a universal language and is an essential part of a well-rounded education. It not only nurtures creativity but also encourages confidence, self-awareness, cognitive abilities, emotional intelligence, and social skills. It is a key that can unlock a child’s potential in so many different areas, which are vital to a successful and happy life.

At Latymer All Saints, music is an integral part of our school’s ethos. We aim to provide high quality music provision, fostering a love and understanding of music, that nurtures and brings out their musicality. Over the course of their study, the children will develop a range of musical skills and abilities. Throughout the school, music is used in various ways including to mark special school events, which often includes music and singing with year groups as well as a whole school song. Music is used as an effective tool to enrich and enhance learning and is also incorporated into daily routines such as our lunchtime prayers, learning number, sounds and chanting times tables. We also have an increased number of pupils taking up individual music lessons with a private tutor provided by Enfield Music service.

    Implementation

    Curriculum

To support our music curriculum and ensure high-quality, engaging lessons for all pupils, we use the Charanga Musical School Scheme of Work. Charanga is a comprehensive, modern music education program designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum for Music. It allows all children to access music in a fun, inclusive, and engaging way through various genres, including classical, pop, jazz, and reggae. Children learn practical skills (playing, singing, performing) and theoretical understanding (musical notation, rhythm, etc.).

    Collective Worship – Praise Assembly

Our weekly praise assemblies teach songs and messages, which are connected to our school’s core values of LOVE, ASPIRATION and SERVICE. We often explore the meaning and background of the songs and children are encouraged to communicate the meaning and the message through their voices using emotion, phrasing and diction. The praise assemblies are also used to prepare children for the songs that they will sing in church services and special assemblies such as the Harvest, Christmas and Easter services.

    Latymer All Saints Gospel Choir

Our diverse and dynamic gospel choir is open to all pupil in KS2 (years 3-6) and rehearsals are held weekly during lunchtime. The children are taught a range of vocal skills and techniques as well as various genres and languages. The children are offered many opportunities to perform, both inside and outside of school. The choir perform at all of the school’s special services (including Harvest, Christmas, Easter, Black History Month and the Year 6 leavers’ service). The choir also take part in various other events in the local community such as singing at Edmonton Green, the Milfield Thearte and the Enfield Music Festivals held in different venues around Enfield. In the past, our talented students have had the privilege of performing in some truly remarkable and inspiring venues, with one of the most memorable being St Paul’s Cathedral.

    Music Week

This special week is a much-loved tradition that not only celebrates the joy of music but also plays a vital role in enriching our music provision here at school. Throughout the week, children will have the opportunity to explore and deepen their love for music through a variety of engaging activities. From musical workshops, concerts put on by music students from local schools, special assemblies with guest performers and speakers, talent shows, dress up days and year group performances, which are all based around the given theme.

In addition to being a fun and educational experience, Music Week also helps raise important funds that go directly back into our music program. These funds support things like:

    • African drumming lessons
    • Recorder and group music sessions
    • Maintaining and replacing musical instruments
    • Providing new musical resources and opportunities for all our pupils

We believe that every child should have access to high-quality music education, and with your continued support, we can ensure that music remains a vibrant part of our school community.

Keep an eye out for more information about how your child will be involved and how you can contribute—whether by donating, volunteering, or simply cheering them on during performances.

    Impact

    Impact

By the end of each academic year, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the elements, skills and processes specified in the relevant area of study. Through regular pupil voice discussions and the monitoring of work outcomes (through work, photos, videos and observation), we assess how confidently the children can talk about and demonstrate the skills and knowledge that they have acquired.
