Reception

In Reception we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum in the context of an enabling and nurturing environment.

There are  7 areas of learning- Personal, Social & Emotional Development, Physical Development, Communication & Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the world and Expressive Arts & Design.

Every morning we provide the children with structured opportunities in maths and literacy. Tasks are differentiated to ensure they are accessible to all children.  A range of resources are used to allow children to work independently.

Every afternoon learning is play based and practical. Children can access activities of interest both inside and outside their classrooms.

As well as assessing children’s recorded book work, we also use a program called Tapestry to create an on-line record of each child’s learning journey.  Parents are able to access this with a login. (Click the link at the bottom of this page for further information)

Parents can use tapestry as a way of communicating with teachers as well as commenting on observations.  They can also upload activities that children have completed at home.

Our curriculum based upon a scheme called ‘The Power of Reading’. The scheme incorporates a list of books, some familiar and some very new and alternative.  The stories are beautifully written and illustrated.  We plan 2/3 weeks worth of activities per book.  The activities cover all of the Early Years curriculum areas.

Children have the opportunity to fully engage with a story, helping them to develop their language and literacy skills. The stories also create a wonderful context for the play- based activities that take place in the afternoons.

It is important that parents and teachers work together to help children reach their full potential.

Reception at Latymer All Saints is a busy and harmonious setting. Children enjoy coming to school and become independent, confident and able learners, equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge for their transition into KS1.
